Barbara Rowell, Sherbrooke
Barbara Rowell, age 25, is from Sherbrooke. Mary Purkey, one of her nominators, wrote that Barbara “has never been a person to draw attention to herself, yet she has wonderful qualities and accomplishments that demonstrate her deep involvement in and commitment to our region and the Lennoxville community. If the English population of the Townships survives and continues to be part of the cultural fabric of Quebec, it will be because of people like Barbara.” Barbara has long been active in Girl Guides (as a Brownie pack leader in Lennoxville) and she is a member of the Canadian Club. On top of this, she is also very involved in the Bishop’s/Champlain Refugee Sponsorship Committee, and helps out by housing young people, hosting fundraising events and opening her home for social activities. Barbara’s community involvement is not limited specifically to the Eastern Townships. She is also highly involved in the Eastern Townships Mae Sot Education project. As part of this project, she has taught in Thailand, and plans to return there soon to teach again. She also interviews new candidates who wish to travel to Thailand, organizes fundraising events and speaks to many local organizations about the project.
