Former Youth Involvement,
Mansonville
For the first time in the history of the Townships Leaders of Tomorrow Awards, a group has been nominated! Former Youth Involvement is a group of ten young adults from Mansonville: Amanda Barnett, Carol McGovern, Jason Forget, Julia Eldridge, Mandy Vachon, Pat Lachance, Rachelle Lachance, Sarah Jersey, Starr Dostie and Tina-Louise Johnson.
This group includes cegep and university students, two nurses, a youth-protection worker (and young mother), an educator for persons with intellectual disabilities, a youth animator, a line operator, a book-keeper in training and a musician. Most of the members work or study outside the community, but return to Mansonville on weekends for meetings or to participate in events. Many of the members in this year's group were also part of last year's group... a group which accumulated 686.5 volunteer hours!
FYI provides support and help to the local SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions). The members hold regular monthly meetings to help SADD, support after-school programs given by the Missisquoi North Volunteer Centre, and help the community.
Murielle Parkes and André Lamy, the two people who nominated FYI, say that some of the accomplishments of this remarkable group include:
Teaching dancing and crafts to youth
Introducing seniors to computers
Helping organize youth dances
Coffee houses
Musical soirées
Pool tournaments
Intergenerational bingo-lunches
Constructing a haunted house for Halloween
Reaching out to other youth groups
Assisting in community events
Participating at a socio-economic youth table
and, finally, raising nearly 7000$ from sales, rock-a-thons, walks, etc. for SADD, the Youth Centre and the Terry Fox Run.
According to Starr Dostie (one of the members of the FYI group): "We were so honored to even be nominated (for a Townships Leaders of Tomorrow Award) that winning was a true achievement. We would like to thank Townshippers’ Association for their recognition of our hard work. Thank you to André Lamy and Murielle Parkes who were our two nominators. We would like to thank Mable Hastings, our youth animator who has made all of this possible. I can say, on behalf of the nine of us, that none of this would be what it is without the dedication, and love that Mable has provided to us from the age of 5 to where we are today. We would not be the active volunteers of our community without all of the opportunities provided to us through Mable".
Congratulations to the Former Youth Involvement Group!
