“With this festival, we are creating a space for elder musicians and artists and younger musicians and artists to perform their favourite material, and times for playing together and learning from one another.
We are going to be surprised by the diversity and high quality of music from performers of different ages throughout the Townships.”
Why?
Last October, in the Lennoxville area, Townshippers’ Association initiated its first interactive Intergenerational Council. The Council brought people of different ages together in a circle, to share their perceptions and talents in an atmosphere of great respect.
Common themes which emerged here became the basis for further activities throughout the year, including:
The Intergenerational Cookie Contest & Holiday Feast: Participants of different ages cooperatively prepared the holiday meal, contestants brought their homemade cookies which were tasted as the story of their recipe was told. All took home a prize. Juggling and live music followed.
The Winter Intergenerational Snowshoeing event: Seniors acted as guides to young people along heritage trails, discovering little known secrets about towns and countryside.
The Great Intergenerational Music Festival: Drumming, dance, songwriting and other workshops, world music choirs, bands, a musical play about health and social services and a coffee house. Over 100 people were in attendance, with 42 musicians and volunteers performing.
